Immediate Reaction: Real Madrid 1-1 Atlético Madrid
Real Madrid 1-1 Atlético Madrid (Mbappé). A draw at home. Here is my reaction to the derby. More for you: Player ratings, interviews and a derby podcast.
With all of the centre-backs out injured, Real Madrid were stuck in a rut. The next two games were the Madrid derby, and Manchester City in the Champions League, both coming at the worst possible time. Still, the fixtures had to be played – and it was Raúl Asencio who was summoned to take the reins in defence. Dani Ceballos sat in the midfield and the attacking front three was as star-studded as usual. Lucas Vázquez captained Real Madrid in the derby.
It was set to be yet another tense showdown, with no real chance being created until the quarter-hour mark, when Samuel Lino shot just wide. Vinícius Júnior then missed a similar strike before events took a slow turn. That was until Atlético were awarded a penalty due to contact made by Aurélien Tchouaméni. Julian Álvarez put his penalty straight down the middle to make it an awkward scoreline of 1-0 to the visitors come half-time.
The second half got off to a bright start for Real Madrid, with Kylian Mbappé pouncing the fastest onto a loose ball inside the area to make it game on. Jude Bellingham immediately hit the crossbar just after as the home side looked to find a lead. Atlético again managed to slow the game down after this, with a Vinícius Júnior strike being well saved the only chance mustered up before the final minutes. They had a final swing during this period, as Rodrygo Goes saw an effort fly just past the post. 1-1 at full-time in the derby.
